River cruising is in a building boom. CLIA reports 21 new river ships scheduled to enter service in 2027, and the headlines on this page show where they are going. A few themes stand out from this season’s announcements.
Bigger names on the rivers
Ocean brands are arriving. Celebrity Cruises has floated out its first river ship ahead of a 2027 European debut, and MSC Group’s Explora Journeys has signed a letter of intent for luxury river ships. Expect more choice at the premium end.
Bigger ships, bigger views
AmaWaterways’ double-width AmaRudi is set to be Europe’s largest river ship, and lines are replacing portholes with sliding glass walls. More space per guest is the trend.
Water levels in writing
After the 2026 drought on the Rhine and Danube, lines are getting more explicit about disruption: Riviera Travel now has a written guarantee of guests’ options when low or high water changes a cruise.
Beyond Europe
New programs on the Nile, the Brahmaputra, the Amazon and the Magdalena show river cruising spreading well past its European heartland.
Active and themed cruises
Guided hikes on the Danube, cycling the Danube Cycle Path, wellness on the Seine and private concerts in Vienna: themed departures keep multiplying.
America’s rivers
New American Cruise Lines ships and routes on the Hudson, Ohio and Arkansas rivers keep US river cruising growing.
Reading River Cruise News Like an Insider
Announcements are exciting, but a headline is not a booking. A few things to keep in mind:
- New ships open for sale early. Launch dates can shift, so maiden-season bookings carry a little more uncertainty.
- Itineraries change. Water levels, lock maintenance and port rules can alter routes even after you book.
- “From” prices are starting points. Your actual fare depends on the date, cabin and offers available when you book.
- Ask what is included. Drinks, excursions, tips and flights vary widely between lines.
